Return of the Rains (apologies to the Hawaiians about my broken Hawaiian). . . seems like we’re due for another downpour this week. I guess it’s a good thing . . . nice to have breaks of sunshine between it all. Even though it was a working weekend for ‘some of us’. Thankfully we had Friday Kanikapila. Always a treat for all in attendance and especially this past Friday. We were graced with the sounds of some young Kane from Hawai’i. 12 steps for ukers
by Michael DaSilva

Do you leave ukuleles all over the house? Do you uke first thing in the morning? At work, with the door closed? What's the longest time period you did not uke? Is it affecting every aspect of your life? Do your friends and family avoid you?

Here are your 12 steps to address your affliction (you might already have started the program):

1) Admit that your life is unmanageable (unless you uke).
2) Believe that a greater power is the only way to restore your sanity (unless you uke).
3) Make the decision to turn your will and your life over to some higher power (such as the uke).
4) Make an inventory of all your musical instruments and sell them all (except the ukes).
5) Admit to all that you uke. (while you uke).
6) Be ready to have your higher power remove all your defects of character. (except your ukeing).
7) Humbly ask your higher power to remove all your shortcomings (except your ukeing).
8) Make a list of all the persons you have harmed and be willing to make amends to them (by ukeing).
9) Make amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure or harm them (oh well, some things just aren't possible).
10) Continue to take that personal inventory (of ukes) and if you counted wrong, admit it only to yourself.
11) Seek through prayer and meditation to improve your ukeing. (Since all those lessons, books, DVDs, workshops, and hours and hours of practice did not help.)
12) Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, try to carry this message to everyone and practice these principles in all our ukeing.

Remember, you can stop ukeing, but you will always be a uker!

Week 1: 2012 Funky Furry Friday!

Aloha Everyone. Well here we are at the ‘beginning’ once again. A New Year and new possibilities. It’s still chilly out and I’m still wearing my layers of fleece and overcoats . . . then it came up in conversation with a group of the Ohana Wahines about the different furs they all had, gathering dust in their closets. Of course, from that came an epiphany, “Hey! Why don’t we have a Friday Dress up with your Favorite (and probably Non-PC) Furs”. I’ve included some examples of Funky Fur here.

So go ahead and haul out those 60/70’s style over coats and let’s see who has the Funkiest Fur of all! Of course, we don’t expect you to go out and buy any new furs (especially real ones) just come with whatever you may have in your closet. Consider this an archeological urban experiment/documentary?

And speaking of FUNky, hear are some of the Fun-Key peoples from last Friday! Sorry, I’m really reaching for funny here. Give me time, it’s a New Year . . . btw, that really is the one and only Frank Simpson below . .

Attention! On a slightly serious note . . .

Ok, since we’re on the subject of Hula, I’ve been asked to mention that our Hula dancers would appreciate it if we did not Pa’ani (i.e. Uke solos / instrumentals) during their dancing. As you know the Hula is closely tied to the lyrics of the Mele (song). With out lyrics (i.e. Pa’ani only) the dance has no meaning. As a result they may not know where they are in the dance, or it may confuse them at the least. So please keep it to a low strum and sing out when we play for our dancers. Mahalo Nui Loa.

Is it really the last days of 2011? Hard to believe but here we are again at the end of another year. Looking back at last Friday with all our special guests and all, it almost feels like a new beginning. About Beginnings and the New Year, Sandy and I will be performing at the Bar at the Hotel Adagio in San Francisco New Year’s Eve, 7pm – 9pm, We’d like to invite any available Pilots (and Hula Navigators)to come by and join us if you’re not busy. We hope to make a party out of it, so please do come by and bring your Ukes!

Week 48: Hau’oli La Ho’omakika’i Hana Hou!

We’re b-a-a-a-ck! Yes the end of the year is looming in the distance another month plus to go! There’s all the shopping, preparations, Christmas Cards (TGF Facebook huh?) and of course all that eating to do!

And speaking of eating, contrary to popular belief, YES, we are having our traditional Thanksgiving Day After Party this Friday.

Please be sure to post what you’ll be bringing this year to the Ohana table. This way we don’t end up with 10 Pumpkin Pies or 20 pounds of sweet potato. Not that that’s a bad thing . . . just not all at once . . .

On behalf of the Kahumoku Away Team, I want to thank you all for a wonderful homecoming last Friday. It really made it clear to us how lucky we are to have Friday Kanikapila. I found out that many of the Camp participants will have to wait for another year before they experience another Kanikapila, woa . . . Mahalo to you all.

So, in honor of Halloween I thought we’d put a theme of “Come as you Aren’t. . . “ out there for you to think about. Week 42: PIKO visits the UFOhana . . .

Aloha Kakahiaka UFOhana. Mahalo for another great Kanikapila this past Friday! The Kaukau, the Mele, the Hula all just blended into a wonderful mix of Aloha, UFOhana style. Mahalo also for your generous contributions to the UFOhana Relief Fund. I see that many of you scored some really choice Hawaiian Attire!

And speaking of scored, check out the really ‘Beeeeg’ Scholarship check (no worries he got the real thing too)Tristan was awarded from PIKO! Mahalo to you all for participating and supporting PIKO events. Thanks to your kokua you all made it possible for PIKO to support our Keiki as they move into higher education. Truly an Ohana to be proud of.

Return of the Rains . . . . Looks like we’re getting an early start on the Rainy Season. I hear there’s a storm brewing on our horizon. Be sure to batten down the wat’evas and to let your Honey Bees know too! You know, just in case you have Bees on an away mission . . . like in busy as . . .

Speaking of busy as a bee . . . it sure looked like the 2 for 1 Aloha attire shirt had everyone buzzing about. Linaka asked that I extended a warm Mahalo Nui Loa to you all for the great response you gave her “Previously Enjoyed and Lovingly Restored Aloha Attire Rack”. Just as an example, check out Maggie’s beautiful Green Aloha Dress below, just one of the “Lovingly Restored” by Linda. Thanks to your generous contributions we’ve have been able to purchase a years supply of Laser Toner. Again, Mahalo to you all.

Week 40: Summer’s End . . . .

Aloha All . . . well it looks like we’re finally heading into fall folks, or maybe we’ll have an Indian Summer before fall falls? Anyway, at least one thing’s for sure, the Strumming will go on.

Btw, to commemorate Summer’s end Linaka is having a 2 for 1 Sale on her Aloha Vintage Clothing. So now is a great time to stock up for the Winter! Mahalo Linaka for all the great Aloha Attire you’ve supplied the Ohana. Mahalo to all of you for your contributions and for giving these wonderful Vintage Clothes a great home. There’s just something about all that color on a Friday Night that adds to the feeling of Aloha . . .
